Beginning Intern 1 & 2
These are the entry courses for any student
joining the Hornet Technologies program. Moving from textbook materials to
classroom presentation, hands-on lab activities, and research, students will
learn computers from the inside-out.
These courses are offered every semester, but more sessions
of Beginning Intern 1 are available in the Fall semester than the Spring so that
students may complete both courses in the same academic year if possible.
Students who have successfully completed Beginning Intern 1 may enroll in
Beginning Intern 2 with the permission of the Director.
Advanced Intern - Survey
The Survey class provides students with a
transition from their Beginning Internship experiences to Advanced Intern
responsibilities. In this class, interns will explore a variety of topics
related to careers in technology.
Currently, the Survey class works with SCSI technologies, the
basic functions of Windows Server 2003, and
with the basic understandings involved with networking.
This course is offered every semester. Students who
have successfully completed both Beginning Intern 1 and 2 may enroll in the
Survey class with the permission of the Director.
Advanced Intern - Diagnosis and Repair
The Diagnosis and Repair course allows Advanced
Interns the opportunity to learn how to determine what is wrong with computers
that won't work, and then how to repair them. These interns work in small groups
with a technician as they begin to troubleshoot problems, decide on a course of
action, and effect the necessary repairs.
Beyond their work with diagnosis and repair, these interns
will also take on increased responsibilities as supervisors during Beginning
Intern build runs. These Advanced Interns will help Instructors to oversee
and assist Beginning Interns as they learn the build process.
This course is offered every semester. Students who
have successfully completed both Beginning Intern 1 & 2 may enroll for this
course with the permission of the Director.
A+ Preparation
The final course in the Hornet Technologies experience is
designed to prepare interns for the A+ tests. This course is designed to
briefly review hardware, and focus predominantly on operating systems.
Students in this course will learn to work with Windows 98, Windows 2000
Professional, and Windows XP Professional. In addition, they will also
review networking fundamentals, virus prevention and repair, portable devices,
and disaster recovery.
The A+ Preparation class is offered every-other year unless
the enrollment request warrants additional offerings.
Students who want to enroll in this course should have successfully completed
all four of the earlier Hornet Tech course offerings, though they are not
necessarily all required. This course requires permission of the Director, and
any student wishing to enroll under special circumstances, especially without
successful completion of the cycle, may schedule an
appointment to discuss their situation with the program Director.
Network+ Preparation
Computer Network Software Operations, the first of the two
courses in the Network+ pathway, builds on the introduction to networking in the
Survey class and enters a much deeper study of those things that allow computers
to function together. Through classroom study, research, and hands-on lab
activities, interns learn about a variety of topics including the OSI model,
network topologies, types of cabling and related specifications, networking
devices, standards for wired networks, and the standards for wireless networks.
Drawing on their knowledge of desktop computer hardware and operating systems,
interns will work to configure a variety of functioning network models.
Advanced Computer Network Software Operations is the final step in preparation
for Network+ Certification testing. Working through a variety of situations,
interns study TCP/IP concepts and fundamentals, IP services, network management,
networking with a variety of operating systems, wide-area network fundamentals,
network security, and troubleshooting.
